yes an automated shut down is legal and is fitted on many electronic controlled large diesel engines you get a warning signal and 30 seconds to pull over and shut down. you can hit an override button that depending on the nature of the fault and the configuration of the computer either buys you another single 30 seconds per press (you cant stack them up you must press the button once every 30 seconds) or one single extra 30 second window. Presses of the button get logged.

The earliest version of it was a hydaulic latch in the fuel pump that if it wasnt recieving oil pressure it would shut down the fuel pump for diesel and a short to earth type oil switch that hooked up to the coil for petrols.
M 2H landcruiser diesel would shut down the engine if the EDIC motor didnt get an oil pressure signal.
