Possibly because the tube into the tank is blocked with rust or corroded with a hole. Check this before you put the return line on.

So I've had this '83 Rangie V8 for a short time now and I'm finding all those strange little things that old cars tend to accumulate.
I just can't work out why someone has moved the fuel return line from the tank to the breather hose. The original pipe on the tank is there, blocked with some brass fittings, so it's not too bodgy, and the original return hose has been lengthened with a short bit of hose and with the correct fittings as well, and it goes onto a T-piece put into the breather hose.
The breather hose is leaking so I've got to fix that but I figured that while I'm at it I should put the return back to where it's supposed to be. But why did someone move it in the first place?

Is the charcol canister still present under the bonnet?
Is the fuel condensation tank (sandwiched between the body skin and the inner wall of the tub) near the fuel filler still present and not leaking?
If either are missing you have part of your answer.
You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
Yeah, good points. I still have to fill the tank right up - maybe the original return inlet pipe will leak then!
All that emission stuff is still there, but not all connected. The charcoal canister is there and connected, except the line to the back of the car. It's broken where it passes near the filler. The condensation tank is there, too.
The hose at the very top of the filler pipe, (where you can't exactly get to it!), is broken.
I don't think that would have much to do with it, though? These primeval emissions systems were very confusing.

Davo, its not that hard to take the right rear quarter panel off, get full access and fix all the stuffed hoses in one hit. If you don't now you'll have to in the not too distant future.

I don't doubt it - buy an old Rangie, therefore begin dismantling for repairs immediately.![]()

I replaced all my vent and return hoses today, 85 RRC.
Found it a bit of a job but managed it with just the filler neck removed.
Condensation tank so thats what that is answers one question, now for another is it ment to be fastened to anything mine just seems to be free floating, its the only rattle the old girl has and its driven me nuts trying to find it.
think a bit of packing foam might be needed.
I think the tank is originally pop riveted to the inner panel with aluminium rivets, and they break or corrode. Loosen off the outer panel at the mud flap, and stuff some bitumen impregnated foam between the tank and the outer panel. BIP foam doesn't hold water and I get mine from a building hardware store.
