    D2 Starter motor removal

Having some Starter motor issues, and thought might be time to remove and clean. Rave says, two bolts and one nut holding it on. Bolts look easy enough to get to, but the nut I cant even touch with a finger. Has anyone got a method for getting this one ? Please.

    If it's a TD5 try a 3/8 drive socket and short extension.
    15mm I think but I'm sure I'll get corected if I'm wrong

Have a look in the good oil as there is a thread there with all the info.

Kyles right, 15mm (SINGLE HEX)socket, 3/8th " drive 6" extension and a ratchet handle that has heaps of leverage because that top nut can be TIGHT Use a single Hex socket as IF you round the nut off = major horror

Do it from underneath, you can just guide the socket and extension to the nut with other hand.

When it doesnt start,is it doing nothing at all????
If so you need to clean then tighten the "trigger" wire at the bottom of the starter.
Its a slide on crimp,GENTLEY,squeeze it with pliers before re-fitting.

It would cluck but not turnover. You could do this several times and than it would start. Always sounded like it had pleanty of power, just not getting good contact. And that was why I planed to clean the solinode on the starter.
I did clean the connectors on the starter and battery ( prob' why its starting first time now ) but I'd done that before on the battery and made no differance, so hences why I thought to service the ten year old starter.

    Zute,

good cold weather to put the pressure on things.
I did mine from below. used a long extension x 2 (or 1.5) on the nut on the top.
I just replace the connectors in the solenoid. I got the parts from Phillip battery place. I think they were $60 for the contacts & $60 for the shaft which on mine was worn out. expensive I thought but that's Canberra.
Hardest part is holding onto the starter when bolting it back in place.

    hope this helps
    regards
    Steve

    Starter moter removal

It starts way back when they build the landrover, they hang the starter motor on a piece of string from the ceiling and build the rover around it.

    Thanks JC,

Just looked it up on the net, would have saved $40. Now I know another place to buy parts. Its always more expensive in Canberra.
