    Radiator construction

    I took an old County V8 radiator in to get it rodded, but apparently its leaking from the core once the guy cleaned it up.

    While chatting to him about my options, he told me that there are 2 core construction methods - one where the cooling tubes go through holes in the fins (ie the fins are continuous from one side of the radiator to the other), and the sort where the fins are a zig-zag pattern between the tubes.

    The radiator that I took him was the first type.

    He explained that the first type (continuous fins) is a stronger construction, and more suited to the vibration etc of offroad driving.
    The ones with the zig-zag fins cool better and are cheaper, but are less robust. He advised me against using that type (he could fit either type of core so it wasn't just a case of him only being able to supply one type).

    Has anyone else been given similar advice, or had any issues with the zig-zag construction cores?

    I was sure the guy was genuine but its good to have independent confirmation.

    I'm planning on doing some remote trips in the future so think I'm better off going for the more robust construction.

    Hey Steve! He’s right; I had the same choice, put exactly the same way. Up here in Emerald QLD you get ripped off for just about everything. I ended up with a “zig-zag” re-core for as little as $800, could have got it down south for $570!!! In hind sight after about 60000+ k’s in my over worked and often abused stage one V8 with the Zig-Zag core worked fine for me,it has never failed without my help!!!. And the money you save can be spent on a new fan! About 10000ks or so into my shiny new radiator, my fan exploded from abuse, and put 5 holes in it, this also blew the fan shroud to bits. I fixed that by crimping and soldering off the damaged cores, a couple a 1000ks later, going through a creek crossing I impaled it on a submerged stick! But the reality seems to me, even the zig-zag radiator will more than likely out last the car.

    Dual and triple pass radiators, the problem is when you block one core you effectively block 2 or 3

    This is about standard radiator single pass tubes, the difference question being about the cooling fins. The arguments for and against each type are correct, personally I would use the most efficient core for hot weather use unless I drove permanently out bush.

    Ah true, that will learn me for skimming

    Disregard what I posted, I know nothing of the zaggy fin construction

    Yes - essentially that's it (although they look a bit different in an normal radiator - especially the tube & fin).

    Ah ok. I wouldn't even consider running tube and fin. There has been a general move away from that design, even in offroading vehicles. The plate and fin will give you the cooling capacity which you require - not sure that the tube and fin will.

    When I was looking at doing the same, I found this a much more economical way of doing things.
