4 glow plugs and dont worry about them even at -2 degrees the td5 starts first turn of the key without them if everything else is up to spec.
check oil in the harness, loose injector plug,MAF, earths and battery voltage.
I have a 2005 TD5 Defender, and the initial start in the morning has become very strained. It started after having a 90k service. When it fires, sounds like one or more cylinders are missing for a few seconds. Once they all seem to fire, the motor runs fine. This only happens on cold starts, but not necessarily on really cold starts. How many glow plugs are there in a TD5? One for each cylinder? How do I check them to see if they are working? Are they hard to access? Are they expensive to replace if failed? Is this my problem, or something else?
Not terribly overly mechanical, but willing to give it a go.
Thanks,
Ken

If I start my TD5 without the glow plugs warming on cold(3-7Deg) it takes only 2 seconds of cranking and it fires running smoth.
Was the fuel filter changed on the 90K service?
Maybe picking up a small amount of air?
Blknight.aus's sugestions are where I'd start too.
Yea my TD5 would start withour glow plugs on the -7 mornings without effort.
My D2 has the same problem at the moment. Have changed the injector harness, changed the MAF and cleaned out the ECU several times to get rid of the oil in there caused by a previous oil in the harness issue.
I also don't have much power when it is cold. It is really annoying.

Sounds like the IAT sensor may be playing up
Intake air temperature. In the induction hose.
Mine has done this a couple of times recently when it was cold too..(not in Qld before anyone says thats not cold) I will change the IAT.
