    RR engine change

    Hi everyone.
    Have an 81 RR manual. Great for age but I am not happy with the power or economy, Mmmm. Not happy with fitting another V8 due to thirst even with gas, been there a couple of times and not happy with LR diesel options either.
    So, has anyone performed a V6 petrol transplant. I was thinking a holden for simplicity or another option is a V6 3.0 ltr t/dsl Merc.
    The later is expensive, but what else is out there with RR creed for under 20K?
    With any motor I still have a 4 speed gearbox, so what are the options there?

    Apart from a used 3.9/4.0/4.6/P76 4.4 , there is no cheap option.
    Easiest diesel swap if you find the parts is an isuzu 4bd1, in the UK you can buy kits for pretty much any 4cyl diesel made from mazda 3500 to perkins, have also seen a MB 5cyl in a rangie - your budget is the only limit.

    Depending on budget, a set of 9.35:1 hi comp pistons, 350 Holley carb, new cam and electronic ignition would transform the beast enough to make it pleasant. Otherwise bolt in a 4.6 from Triumph Rover spares and a 5 speed box. $$$$. Give the V6 a miss, engineering costs will outweigh any economy gain.

    What would the Kws be after the build and obviouslt would be better on gas with HC pistons?

    Numbers? Sorry, can't help with that, but I know how my old rangie feels with a 9.35:1 SD1 engine and holley on gas. Ample zippy for me.

    P.S. I remember reading the specs for the 10.5:1 engine in the 3500S and that did about 180bhp as to the rangie's 130. So somewhere under that? Remember it's also about torque in the RR so gas is helped with a good advance curve.

    Be interestiing see the difference between the 4.6 and say a Holden 3.8 V6 supercharged . Hmm more power , much more Torque , far better fuel economy , and will cpst less than the 4.6 . Marks 4WD does the adapters !!

    3.8 V6 and economy do not go together. Supercharger and economy don't go together either.

    Thanks again for all your responses, however due to other circumstances, I am putting the 2 door on the market. Check her out in the Market on this site. Nice and straight, with 10mths NSW rego.

    Yeah Dougal , they dont in Rover V8's , but the 3.8 supercharged V6 is quoted as doing 7.5l /100k cruising, which is bout twice as good as any Rover V8 , NA or Supercharged in a 1650KG + Vehicle as well !!

    • V8 5.7L Manual: 13.0 / 7.4 (L/100km) AS2877
      • V6 Automatic City / Highway: 12.0 / 7.2 (L/100km)
      • V6 Manual: 11.0 / 7.2 (L/100km)
      • Supercharged V6 Automatic: 13.5 / 7.8 (L/100km)
      • V8 5.0L Automatic: 15.0 / 9.0 (L/100km)
      • V8 5.0L Manual: 14.0 / 9.0 (L/100km)
      • V8 5.7L Automatic City/Highway: 13.0 / 8.5 (L/100km)
      • V8 5.7L Manual: 13.0 / 7.4 (L/100km)
      • Even if you added another 1000Kg it would still be better than a Rover V8
