    Exhaust smells like paint

Hi all, today my exhaust started smelling like paint or paint thinners a bit. Have I got a dodgy batch of diesel. Only started doing it after fueling up at Caltex. Was only about 40 litres and is running ok. TD5 Defender.

Check your exhaust, have you run over anything like a plastic bag or something thats being burnt on the exhaust?

    Smile Exhaust smell

HI Craig, sent idea on your smell regarding bio -diesel and non-genuine filters butI'm useless on computers and probably sent it to russia!!!Als ,if your EGR valve is sticking it sends exhaust gas back to be burnt which can cause a pongy exhaust, best to remove egr as they all stick eventually. could just be dodgy fuel as well.

    Paint smell

Well Craig, cant find first response, damn!!can't and hate typing, last reply took 2omin to typeS@#$T.Will try again,I've been making and using b100 biodiesel (made to standard) for 15 years ,did 130000 in tdi disco now 50000 so far in Td5 with no probs,BUT.....mymates Td5 has gon through 4,yes four fuel pumps in same time using mostly my fuel and small amounts of dino diesel. For a long time his fuel and tank smelt like oil(turps ) based paint with sticky red residue which stuck ceramic-discs together in low press side of of pump.We first blamed fuel companies but he switched brands and same result.TOcut long story short, only difference in vehicles washis using after market fuel filter and mine allways with genuine filter????Saved his last pump by fitting 15A fuse instead of factory 30A,blew fuse instead of burning out pump.Oxidation in biodiesel is a problem due to high oxygen levels (good for combustion though) so all my fuel gets anti-oxidation treatment. Not really helping you but thought it was rellavant to smell.Mate now using l'rover filter so tests ongoing, will keep forum posted, cheers for now,Gregg
