Series 1 Disco Transfer Lever problem?????

My Series 1 V8 Disco started jumping out of high range constantly this week.

On Friday it went out and now will only get Low range.

I spoke to mechanic who said it may be the lever or selector.

I've had look and does not look like it is easy to get to.

Anyone else had this and was it was easily rectified or is maybe the transfer case has crapped it self.

I also noticed the last couple of times it was in low range there was grinding noise coming form it as well.

Any help would be much appreciated.

sorry dude sounds like its boned. oftin times when a transmition goes it will not stay in gear, i had that happen on a 5 speed where it poped out of 5th a few times in the same trip, then i had to hold it there, after a few minuts the gear compleatly discinagrated and lost all drive. i would say that the first step is remove transfer case, if it was a diffrent problem like would not go in i would say investagate a sticky linkage, but poping out is a diffrent story, unless your unsure if it has moved all the way over, eg some times they can transfer drive but not be totaly locked in, eg 1/3 the way locked in, in that case yes it can pop out and when it dose it will grind but if your sure its locked in and not transfering drive then you have internal problems. the most cost efective way of fixing them i hear is to just do a swap with a used one as the cost of parts ect and labor are becoming beyond finantial practacality. you should be able to get one for around 300 bucks. i know a good wrecker in melbourn if you are out that way. let me know how you go.

    cheers, jeff.

    Thanks for that.

That sounds cheap. The Local wrecker up here wants $950.00 2nd hand. One in nearest capital wants $600.

I reckon it could well be the linkage. How many K's has the car done?

It may be jumping out because it isnt engaging properly. Had the transfer case lever been getting stiff? or was it easy to shift?

the best guy i have found is steve in victoria, he oftin traides on ebay his name is a bit rude but he is a good bloke, i have bought heeps of parts off him. he parts out discoverys mostly seris 1 if you look on ebay his user name is "sexgodsteve69" im sure he would have heeps of transfer cases there. if you prive message me ill send you his phone number. probably best to sniff out the problem before you order a new one.

eg rule out the shifting linkage.

    Thanks guys.

It has just hit 300,000km but it is a country car so all country kms.

It has been an angel so far, bought it brand new and the most expensive thing so far has been a blown head gasket.

The shift hasnt been any stiffer lately, until now and now it is really stiff.

I can see there is an adjustment on teh side of the linkage but not sure if that will help, or whether the box needs to come out to fix it if is the linkage.

How difficult is it to pull the linkages and lever out completely and then engage high range by hand to isolate the problem?.

Finally got the shift off the top the transfer case after removing centre console.

The selector shaft is as far back as it will go, so it looks like it is something inside which I guess means a new transfer case.

I had the same thing happen to my RR Classic, the only way I could engage high or low range in the end was to pull off the inspection plate and do it by hand. I put up with high range only for about 12 months because I was expecting it to be a huge cost to repair. Finally bit the bullet and asked a land rover mechanic to find out that it was a loose grub screw on the inside of the transfer that could be accessed without even removing the transfer case. All up I think it cost me about $200 to get them to fix the problem.
