mine would never close properly or lock either.
I think your best bet is replacing the mechanism thats broke and adjusting it properly.
Most other locks would look a bit odd I think if you can see them externally.
On my '83 Rangie's top tailgate the catch on the RH side is missing. So at the moment the LH catch works on that side and on the RH side a previous owner put on a padbolt. Ugly, and not lockable since it's held in with screws.
I could replace the missing parts but they aren't easy to get here and aren't known to work so well in the first place, and so an improvement would be nice. I've been trying to figure out what would work as an alternative - T-handle catches? - or something, but I can't come up with anything. (This is why I've had a simple Landie for 20 years instead of a fancypants Range Rover.) There's not much of a frame to go through since it's so narrow, too.
What has anyone else done that's worked really well? (At least that isn't a padbolt!)
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.

Rovacraft in perth should be able to supply them and post them.
I had to wait a week in Kununurra for new catches, as they sent them to Gippsland and a pair of Disco 11 airbags instead.LOL
But barring the stuff up the should be there in a couple of days and cost only $65 each.
Buy both sides.

I'd second Rovacraft. Broke a gas strut mounting bracket on the upper tailgate recently. I was pleasantly surprised that they had it in stock when I rang up.
Cheers Steve
It's all an adjustment thing, very fiddly as you have to adjust both the striking pins and the operating rods.
But worth it in the end.
You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
