    300tdi ticking under load

    Hi,

I have a ticking noise which comes in above 2000rpm only when under load. In other words, I can put it in neutral and rev the guts out of it and I get no noise.

I guess it would be an exhaust leak somewhere but the trouble is that I can't diagnose the location with the car in the driveway.

Short of removing the bonnet and sitting in the engine bay while cruising down the highway, does anyone have any suggestions as to how to locate the source of the noise?

    Thanks

    Adam

One trick if you haven't got a stethoscope is to make one from a short (abt 1 - 1.2m) length of garden hose and listen to one end while directing/holding the other end of the hose close to manifold joint areas etc while it's idling or get some one to rev it a bit while you do it.

Just replace the exhaust/inlet manifold gasket.

These things are known to break/tear occasionally.

Another possibility is a valve stem cap going/gone, (reasonably common) or just a tappet adjustment needed.

I once had a noise problem and just could not trace as it always happened while I was under way.So in desperation I jacked it up onto four heavy duty axle stands , started it up then into gear and simulated driving .Found the noise in no time.Mine was different to yours and turned out to be the mud shield on the front prop shaft loosening and then sounding like a banshee.Maybe the axle stands thing could work for you.
