    Sluggish 300Tdi

I am happy to note that my 98 Discovery is back on the road after sitting in the garage for 6months. But after all this time the car is feeling VERY sluggish...

My thoughts are the fuel lift pump as there is no resistance in the primer... OR the fact that the tank is full of 6 month old Diesel...

Let me know what you think it could be.

    Kind Regards James.

If there is no resistance in the primer on the fuel pump then it is "up" on the cam lobe, rotate the engine till you get resistance. You may have sludge in the fuel and it is clogging the fuel filter, check the sediment bowl and the fuel filter, if its got sludge in it drain tank, sediment bowl, fit new filter and top up with fresh fuel, Regards Frank.

Make sure you check the adjustment on the Accelerator cable before you start pulling things apart.

What was it in the garage for 6 months for? Did you have the timing belt or injection pump off? If so and its really sluggish maybe pump timing out.

Otherwise I agree with the other guys. Start basic like fuel and filter. Diesel doesn't really go off but in hotter/tropical climates can get a fungus type stuff growing in it.

Use to get that fungus/sludge build up in the top of the fuel filter housing all the time when working on dieseld in Far N/Qld. Most fuel filted housings have a gauze type set up in the top of them on the inlet side. Some of the housings can't be pulled apart but you can back flush them with a bit of solvent. A decent diesel additive can help break the slugde down.

Or it could be something else. Hope it works out for ya....

If the primer still doesn't work after rotating the engine a little to get it off the cam then the hand primer has failed which will not affect the performance or running at all. I never use it in fact as the 300tdi self bleeds easily if you start it up or use the starter to get it to fire. The prob is probably what the others have stated and most likely an algal growth blocking your filter. Check also if your lift pump is the standard disco one or a defender style one which has a mesh screen under the top cap of the pump. You will know as there is a flat head screw on the top of the pump of the deffy style pump.
Could also be the pin seized in the boost compensator of your injector pump. It rides on the tapered part of the shaft below the diaphragm and if stuck will not allow more fuel as boost increases.
