    Discovery Exhaust Advice

    Hi there,

I am a new member of this splendid forum and I imagine like a lot of new members who post in the technical forum first I have a LR D1 3.9 V8 and don't quite know what I'm doing!

The rather tired V8 that I have recently started to sound like a Briggs and Stratton lawnmover engine and after looking all over it seems to be blowing from the exhaust manifold (right hand rear cylinder). I can see any crack in the manifold, although not easy to see under or round the back, but it seems there is exhaust escaping along the engine block as if the gasket has failed.

So I would be grateful if anyone could help with a couple of questions.

Do these gaskets often just "fail"?

Is it sometimes possible just to tighten the studs and the problem disappear?

What precautions should I take/how likely is it that the studs will shear when I try and remove the nuts? (My past experience on other cars is that exhaust studs have the consistency of cheese).

I assume it's not possible to change one gasket at a time?

Are there any clever "bush" fixes that I can throw at, so as to drive 350 kms north and get into my new shed.

    Any comments/advice would be welcome.

    Cheers,

    Newbie Mac.

There is no reason why you could not do one side only, as you would do one at a time anyway, you may have to buy both left right gaskets.
For a bush fix, you could try some exhaust putty or stag, push it into the hole let it dry, see if it holds. It may just blow out??

I have not touched the Rover V8, but plenty of other types

Quite frequently the exhaust manifold bolts come loose and fall out. Check and tighten the bolts first. If the gasket has blown out completely you can remove the manifold bolts and throw out all the gaskets on that side. It should seal adequately until you can fit a new gasket set to that side. Many replacement gaskets are made in one piece with connectors between the cylinders to make them easier to install. Permaseal part number EM45, one per side. On the LHS I usually remove the part of the gasket that is near the dip stick and fit it in 2 halves.

    Thanks, for the insight.

I will check the bolts next, although don't look loose, then work from there. Did try throwing some gun gun at it but no joy.

    Cheers,
    Mac
