Yeah mate, the RTC3511 seal has to be fitted 4mm deep too, not flush like the late model seals otherwise you'll chew the outer lip to hell...
I was hoping to get my hubs back on tonight after doing up the brakes
One of the old seals not sure of the number, says fit to 4mm ie. from the top of the hub to top of the seal
I have ordered RT3511, the double lip seals, they look slightly different and I was just wondering how I should fit them?
Set in 4mm as well? or all the way to the notch in the hub?
If anyone knows, could they spare a minute and I'll give you a call
Thanks

I trial fitted one before you replied by tapping it all the way until it hits the stop that a normal seal should sit on
This means the seal is fitted to 6.5mm do you think this will matter?
The seals that I have don't have the outer dust lip that runs on the vertical part of the stub axle, so I imagine it won't
The RTC3511s that I've fitted have a lip that matches into a bevelled edge on the hub. So they end up being flush. That is for a 94 Disco1.
Make sure you clean up the surface they run on on the stub axle.
Only the outer lip, IIRC the actual body of the seal is supposed to mounted 4mm deep into the hub so that lip runs on the vertical face of the hub as a dust seal.
Pretty sure that's how it goes, it's probably four or five years since i fitted the last one and no oil leaks since (touch wood)
The inner seals can be located by using the outer flange, as a driver. The lip is just about the right height to get the right depth. Worked for me anyway.......
I seat my RTC3511 seals until the outer lip is just inside the hub lip. Check by running steel rule across the face and make sure it clears.
This is probably 4mm, but I use clearance to check rather than measurement.
We nock them in around 3-4mm and havn't had any probs yet, i have nocked them in flush before as well and havn't had any issue's either
TIM.

Thanks for the replies fellas
I got the rear hubs on, just the fronts to do tomorrow night and maybe some new shockies if I'm feeling energetic enough
I'll let you know how they go
Once you've got those sorted, have a crack at the hub seals on your fergie. They're pox and we've got three of them.
