    Defender Driveline Cooling

    Gday

After towing about 2 ton at highway speeds on the weekend I leant under and touched the gearbox/transfer case

    Both were mighty warm

I know you can fit these to a transfer case

    Roverdrive Gear Corporation - Accessories

But is there anything for the gearbox, or will cooling the transfer case help to cool the gearbox?

    Thanks

Just cruising down the highway @ 100km/h for 7-10km I've recorded gearbox temps over 75*C.

You can retrofit the oil cooler t/stat and lines onto an R380 in a Tdi with a little work.
The t/stat opens at 74*C so that'll give you an idea of how hot the gearbox gets (and t/stats aren't fully open for another 8* or so)

I was thinking something along the lines of a cooler, what do you use to pump the oil through the cooler though?

V8 RRC's and Disco's and TD5's here all used a gearbox oil cooler on the LT77 and R380, as do the UK army Tdi's (with a whopping big cooler in front of the radiator)

All powered by the pump in the 'box

if you look at the upper left rear of the extension housing you'll see a by-pass pipe and cover.
This is removed and the t/stat housing bolts on with the cooler lines going forward.
Have a look under a TD5 and you'll see they use a fixed line that crosses over and goes up the driver side of the engine and back (no actual cooler/radiator up front as such, the lines do the job in this case)

Do a search, there's a few posts by me, Bush65, etc on the oil cooler and t/stat housing adapter.

Just wondering how effective it would be to fit a second snorkle and plum it down to blow cool air around the gearbox/transfer case? may be another option, and one less oil line to leak. but again not sure how effective it would be.

Or you could use high temp fluids. Pat

One thing I forgot to mention is that I lagged the exhaust from the turbo back to the t/case with header wrap. (Thermo-Tec, I had it on the shelf left over from my racing days)

It's actually Inc's idea, I was never game to do it as there were tons of stories on the 'net of people fatigue cracking their exhausts (mostly urban myth it turns out) but he did and so convinced me.
Way back in another lifetime Inc was a diesel fitter and worked on some big marine turbo diesels and they all used mild steel exhausts lagged from the dump pipe back.

Mines been lagged for about three years now and it dramatically reduced the heat coming into the cab from the trans tunnel and I assume into the gearbox and t/case too.
