After seeing lots of use and mud etc I tought my alternator had died.
My dash light didnt say it was faulty, it was just flattening brand new battery which cause the engine to flood and the Taco wont work at all below 2000rpm then it seems fine
Car 92 3.5ltr disco
Brand New spark plugs
Brand New alternator
Brand New alt belt
Now it has done two hundred kms hwy and light off road and blown the brand new alternator again the same way, taco etc.
Why am I blowing alternators???? It getting too expensive to run at $300 per alternator a tank of fuel.
Also we live in rural Vic and takes a couple days to get things so its not just an easy trip to a landrover specialist. We do have a good auto elec but he is stumped.

Take your dead alternator to a wrecking yard or auto elec, find a Bosch alternator that has similar mounting points. Could be something like Magna, XE-XF Falcon. Make this replacement alternator fit, you may need to fabricate brackets a bit. Then you will have an alternator that is easily fixed. You will need a connection soldered inside to one of the main diode-to-field connections, this wire is for your tacho to connect to. XE-XF has a small round pin on the back that is already connected this way. Should cost around $100.
Thanks, I will talk tp auto elec about that, my main concern is why it has blown up two alternators and to stop it happening again.
The battery was replaced a month or so ago is it possible it is causing the problem (if this has any effect)
Don't really need a reason, things just happen sometimes. If you got to four alts I would start to worry. At least your Bosch won't need $300 to replace. Its main failure is the brushes and regulator and they undo with 2 screws from outside, cheep as. They are really easy to work on unlike most other branded stuff.
I spoke to Auto elec he has ordered a replacement under warranty (reason for buying new). If I had of known the cost factor and the knowledge of the XF alternator I would have done that first. If second new one goes bang then I will ask for refund and chase the Bosch one.
Thanks for your advise, I did think there would have been another fault causing it, auto elec said same thing as you "it happens".
