    2000 Defender LT230 - Dead/Dying

Well there is a lovely whining noise coming from the transmission in 5th gear. With transfer case in neutral 5th gear engaged and my head under the car it sounds like someone has emptied a bag of bolts into the transfer case. Something is defintely loose and its at a family friends mechanics to pull the inspection cover off and have a looksee.

Option A: Swap over transfer case $1700 + labour, get car back and continue with life

Option B: Ebay rebuild kit $300 + Labour assuming transfer case is salvagable, get car back and continue with life

Option C: continue with life until death of transfercase

From an internet explanation sounds more like the gear bag extension / 5th gear bearing.
    as opposed to the transfer...

If the tcase is in nuetral and the gbag is in 5th and your hearing noises me be thinking its gbag or perhaps input transfer case and PTO bearing? Its easy to visual the r380 output shaft and input gear by pulling the PTO...

The extension housing of the R380; 5th gear, bearing shaft and oil pump are all known to play up?
