Hi to everyone - I've already posted this elsewhere but was advised to post in here as well.
I was wondering if anyone had experience of the following problem and some advice please.
I've a 94 Discovery (4.0 V8) which I absolutely love (my first Land Rover). Unfortunately this love hasn't been reciprocated too well of late. The trouble I have is that when the car is idle at lights sometimes it's developed a tendency to stall and just won't start again. I've been told that this is possibly something to do with the distributor (or something on the back of it - but in front of a coolant hose) and involves magnets and regulating the injectors - if I remember correctly a crankshaft or camshaft position sensor?
The problem (so I've been told) isn't to do with overheating per se, just this specific part overheating.
Today was something new though. I'd driven it and it started making "chugging" noises (best way I can describe it is like in war films when a plane is shot and you can hear the engine spluttering) so I parked up. We walked to where we were going and came back a couple of hours later. It turned over but wouldn't start, so I poured some water on the part in question (back of distributor), left it for five minutes to cool down and is started again (again as you can probably tell I'm absolutely clueless with cars and just did as I was instructed by a mechanic).
I'm being advised to sell the Disco, but I really don't want to unless it's unsaveable. That said, it's got to the stage where I don't want to drive it as a couple of times I've been stuck at lights in rush hour and I'm worried of breaking down all the time. I want to get this fixed but don't weant to throw good money after bad. As such I would really appreciate any advice from much more knowledgable people than me. The condition of the car otherwise is pretty immaculate.
Any ideas of what's going on (difficult I appreciate from my pretty sketchy description) or recommendations of who I might take it to here on the Coast?
Cheers - and thanks in advance.
Alexander
