Mal, Just a suggestion. Might be worth checking the clutch fork. I believe they are a problem in this vintage. Wear right through at the pivot, pretty sure there are hd forks available.
Good amorning all,
I have just had what we think is a cluch failure on my 130 Tdi defender. The cluch plate/pressure plate etc were all replaced about 22000 km ago witha borg and beck HD unit. (no big loads no heavy towing) The mechanic has told me that they have had untold problems with after market units and will replace it with a genuine LR heavy duty unit.
My question is: are the genuine units not manufactured by Veola (sic) or are they completely different? I really want to sort this cluch out as I think I have been having problems since day 1.
any advice?
cheers

I had my 300tdi clutch replaced 40,000k ago with a genuine heavy duty unit. Last week it was replaced again because of slipping. No apparent reason as I only drive on road and rarely tow. Also the slave cylinder had gone again and it was replaced too. Clutch failure is a big topic of conversation around here. Jim

Hi Jim, I have replaced the slave when the clutch was replaced and have done the master twice in the same 22000km. I had no warning of the failure, no slipping just a big cluck followed by a whizzzzzz. It is all very odd this as other car brands go for years with after market clutches and some for 100000km with same old master and slave. It seems to be a real problem!!!
Thanks

Yep Valeo are an OE manufacturer, but I'm pretty sure AP Driveline (Borg and Beck) were too.
Back when I replaced mine several years ago JC recommended an AP/B&B one as he had numerous Valeos fail with a few miles on them so that's what I fitted.
I have noticed that he's been fitting some Valeo's in the more recent past from his posts so may be worth a PM.
AP have had financial problems over the last two years but I'm pretty sure have traded out of them.
Thanks Rick,
Thats what I thought. I have read somewhere that B&B were recently taken over by some one or other. So I guess the question still remains will the "genuine" LR clutch out perform the after market one?????

Mal,
this mob Xtreme Clutch - All Australian High Performance Clutch Systems and Components do a HD unit for the 300tdi. Rated at 450Nm.
I installed one recently and its very strong. Fairly heavy pedal pressure but nothing to worry about.
They build them here in OZ and the quality seems spot on.
