check the oil level and condition in the main gear box, the tcase and the rear diff.
I have recently purchased a 1996 manual 3.9 Litre series one disco with a full service history by Land rover . It has done 123,00k and goes like a rocket and everything works. The only issue is the gear whine in top gear.Is this normal or do I need to check the oil in the box or transfer case ? Any ideas?

yeah i'd check the rear diff as well as the g'box and t'case, i'm in the middle of fixing a rear diff whine in mine.
if you have 4 car/chassis stands or you have access to a 2 post hoist try jacking it up and driving it on the jacks and see if you can locate the noise that way
Thats how i found the whine in mine.
