Thread: Air bags on the rear of a 130.

    Air bags on the rear of a 130.

    Hi all

    I am looking at installing a long range fuel tank, and I am concerned about the extra weight sagging my rear end.

    Do I buy the red poly air bags to go inside the rear coils (I have aftermarket EFS springs with 2" lift and no inner spring)

    Or

    Do I buy the replacement HD air bags from Airbagman and replace the spring all together?

    I have just rung Airbagman for a quote....$1300 for the replacement bags. hmmm....I guess it comes down to how much I want to spend. I new set of HD springs (2" lift) are $180 a pair and polyair bags are $350 a set...big difference

    Timbren, Hellwig Helper Springs, Bilstein Shocks, Firestone, Air Spring Kits, Mile Marker Winch

    I got some of the firestone ones for my disco. much cheaper than polyairs.

    I needed 2" spacers which i got from suspension stuff

    All up it cost me about $250 including delivery.

    I know how you feel about the $1300, I bought the same bags from the US, about $450 delivered, and I need to make up the mounts. I contacted Airbag Man about the possibillity of buying their brackets/mounts by themselves, but they weren't prepared to sell them to me without the bags.
    I was a bit dissapointed- they said they won't sell the brackets for use with any other bags (but mine are the one's I want to use, with a different piston shape) - but in the long run it's going to cost me a bit of work, and $120 to get the bits laser cut - so probably cheaper anyway.

    If you go full air as I have it will cost a little more than $1300. You will end up with an Air compressor, tank and in cab controls.
    Very fiddly with Manual inflation. The slightest change in load and your altering the pressure all the time.

    I had poly air before but they couldn't handle the loads I carry and one popped
    They're also very prone to puncturing.

    In a normal application I think they work very well and are more progressive than the full air. Hence why you will need the air supply and in cab controllers with full air springs.

    How much more does the self leveller mechanism bump up the cost Tony ?

    You do have to get the right size one though, the 110/130 spring is a bigger ID than a Disco/RRC

    The airbag man in cab control panel is $325...then you need an air compressor, tank and air lines...

    Well...after about an hour of procrastinating...I called Shane at Suspension Stuff and ordered new 2" lift Dobinson coils, new extended Bilsteins and poly air bags for the rear....I only carry camping gear so the weight isn't that great...

    Install will happen next Wednesday....picture to come.

    Ive been looking at similar set ups and am leaning towards one of the kits listed in the link and a set of the firestone bags .

    You can either get self leveling with a sensor or remote leveling with either a key fob or a wireless on dash control tho theres no inline pressure gauge to see what pressure its at tho id say it would not be hard to plumb one in .

    There is problems with levelling with pressures, I lived in a dudes house who built minitrucks as his job, was telling me about all the systems, said Dakota's were forever reacting and would constantly run the compressor and be really annoying as it would adjust everytime you left a servo, driveway etc!

    The other downside of adjusting with pressure, is that you load up one side of your vehicle, it see's more pressure on that side bag, then try's to compensate, by either reducing the pressure in that bag or increasing it in the other, that's why I went with accuair, as it utelises ride height sensors and from all my phone calls and research is the best on the market.......albeit, a little dearer

    Accuair is the best behaved system. I have only gone around it for simplicity reasons at this stage. More things to get torn off by sticks etc I may do the front though.
    It's quite disturbing how often you have to fiddle with the in cab controllers. Lets just say it isn't fool proof for obvious reasons.
