I assume the original engine had cast iron cylinders and cast either iron or aluminium crankcase? And were the original pistons cast iron or alloy?
John
And here are some photos of the crankcase and oil pan in progress.

Now that’s a true engineering champion! Good stuff!
What an interesting project!
How did he go about finding details of the original cars? Was there much information available?

Not a lot, and most sources were repeating what was on others. I did find a photo of the remains of one car which is being restored/reconstructed in England with an original type engine obtained from an Italian Museum. That monstrous high and long bonnet line is chock full of engine.
The engine was a FIAT four cylinder 28 litre used on airships.
My mate has been building this for about a year now, and is using mostly what he has on hand or can obtain from scrap yards. He is 75 years old, a former farmer. He has a remarkable collection of vehicles and machinery and a most comprehensive engineering capacity. I am attaching a photo of one of the cars he has built in the last few years. It uses a GMC V12 of 702 cubic inches. Built in the style of a veteran raceabout.

Here is another car he built about 5-6 years ago.
Unknown chassis, Auburn front and two speed rear axles, Packard front brakes, 1938 Buick straight eight engine with a 4-71 Detroit supercharger. Quite fast and quite noisy.

was this Fiat called the Mephistopheles?

The fabricated 16 litre has been completed and has been started. Short video attached of engine start.
Mods- there are four threads on this subject. Can you merge them?
