DONT undo the plastic bung, it will brake.
You dont need to dismount the hole unit, just the bowl.
Use a 10 or 11mm spaner on the bolt, on top of the unit, once you start to loosen the bowl you will find it comes in two parts.
Hi all, under the disco up the back near the fuel tank bolted to the chassis is a sediment trap sort of thing or another filter of some kind. its been a while, 2 years or so, since it was cleaned out cause i sorta forgot about it, last time it was done Bruce Davis did it when they rebuilt by injector pump. I didnt even know it was there until he told me thats what caused my pump to fail as it hadnt been cleaned out.
I got under the car the other day and there is a plastic bung in the bottom of it which i assume is for draining it out but I cant get the bung undone, its really tight and I dont want to force it and break it.
Do i need to take it completely off the chassis and unbolt everything in order to clean it out properly or does it come appart somehow whilst still on the car?

It comes apart in the car, there is a 7/16 headed bolt on the top in the middle. undo it and it will come apart in a few sections. You can fit a longer bolt and remove the spacer and fit another filter (cav filter 296)
Matt,
Buy a spare bung and washer for the sedimenter before you undo the original...just in case it does break.
I had a spare on hand when I drained mine just in case. It didn't.

The only problem with fitting a 296 in the sedimenter is that you lose half your potential water volume.
If you fill up and get a tank of dieso + water its nice to have a full 500mL or so of sedimenter to take water out of the equation.
Just undo the bolt and check the thing regularly!
Steve
You can replace the plastic drain with a 5/16 UNC stainless steel bolt or socket head capscrew. Most plastic drains break on undoing.
As the fella's above have suggested it's probably better to split the thing regularly by undoing the centre bolt at the top and give it a good cleanout. It's amazing the stuff that gets trapped/falls out/grows in there.
thanks guys, i'll check out the cas filter, i have heard a bit about them and havent heard and negatives so i'll give one a go.
Does Auto 1 etc stock them or do i need to go to a specialist?

Just had a quick look on ebay and they have a few of them but some of them have 296-4 etc after them. Is it just 296 with no other number after the 296 that suits the disco?
