    Engine Oils

Hi all, i know this has been done to death and the "Which Engine Oil Do You Use?" question is like "Which Chainsaw is best?" but since changing jobs im working in the town I live in and not having to travel 15km or so to work which allows the engine to get up to operating temp and run for a while which is how diesel engines prefer to be operated.

As a result I found that after 4000km (it hasnt been 6 months since the last service) the engine in the disco (which i only 20000km old) has used oil down to nearly the add line and the oil is really really black. The first 1500km was a trip to melbourne and back with a car trailer and it didnt seem to use any at all during that trip, maybe a bit under load with the trailer loaded on the way home).

At the moment Im using Valvoline Super Diesel which has been really good to now but the disco seems to be burning quite a bit of it with the shorter runs it seems to be using oil like it used to start doing once the oil had done 5000km.

Is this a case of changing oil more regularly with the shorter trips or would a different oil be suited to this?

    Matt

Really short trips = change the oil more frequently, there's no avoiding it, how far are the trips one way now ?

The colour is normal, it's a Tdi and at least 0.5 litre of old oil gets left over in the sump and oil cooler lines each change.

If you are only doing 4-5km, I'd save the Disco and ride a bike

Yeah, they are only a few Km's at maximum. We bought a 250cc GPX Kawasaki for us to ride on the short trips to work to save the disco. Im in the process of doing up a commodore as our daily driver to limit the disco to longer trips for 4wding. Will be getting a new Mtn Bike for the warmer weather and I'll start riding that to.

It gets black straight away, as you said some oil is left in the system, but it does seem black than normal (if thats possible)

I thought more frequent changes was the answer just wasnt sure if another type of oil would be better suited to that sort of driving.

As far as I'm aware no oil copes very well with that sort of operation.

I think in Oz Valvoline Super Diesel (which is a all fleet product) is made using only Group 1 stock. With your running you may find a Group 2 like Delo a better choice.

Originally I rank Caltex when I bought the disco as there was a caltex depot in town (has since closed down) and they recommend Caltex Semi Sythetic. Then the depot closed down and the only place to get it was the servo which was to expensive. I swapped to Super Diesel cause Auto 1 is a distributor so i get 20L drums cheap and get 3 services out of one drum.

Alot of people are using the Penrite HPR15 so i might give that a go and see how that works out.

I trial Delo 400 for a while but its thinner than Super Diesel and the Semi Synthetic.

I drive my car about 8km's to work and i am in very similar position.

I do need it often during the day for mainly short trips though and riding is not really going to cut it.

The oil that has given me best results has been a semi syn Penrite.
In my other cars I had oil pressure gauges and that oil was more consistent when motor got hot and the pressure was built up very quickly as to when the mechanic uses his Castrol stuff.
The oil light in car also goes out very quickly.

The motor 300tdi does not seem to use much oil at all though!
    I change every 5k km's though regardless.
My way of bonding with the motor.
