Thread: converting aircon county to airflaps. What heater to use?

I've been looking at the same thing.. and have been thinking about a tdi heater. S3 heaters you need to cut a hole in the side (which I don't want to do).

There are (apparently) a couple of different types of tdi heaters as well... all of which are rather crap..

How hard could it be* to make a heater that worked? I mean, you need an radiator and a fan, right? put it in a box and you're good to go? You could even use a fan that *shock* *horror* /moved air/.

I'm going to use a series 3/stage 1 unit, but I'm going to run twin snorkels, feed the heater air through the passenger one with a prefilter, hoping this will negate the need for an air flap and will provide dust free air too


Well, that's the theory atleast

A young bloke on the forum was doing exactly this and bought a series III heater from me and the vents off and old series 2...will think of his name soon and find out how he went

He hasn't done anything yet... All the parts are still sitting on the shelf, waiting while I see to more important things, like swapping my rattly gearbox.

I know a little about the county's , I use to sell them them for Winterfauls back in the early 80's .There was only the V8 and the terrific Isuzu in them days , only a 4 speed and then went to 5 speed when I wouldnt sell them anymore .(another long story of dust suppression issues)
Anyway to cut along story short , Those in the Know ordered their 110 counties without Air-con and the after purchase went and had the Ford F100 air cons fitted.Apart from being 1 third the price they worked 10 times better than the Landrover garbage.As the F100 was a underdash job , it worked a whole lot better , with no ridiculous vacuum switching and number 1 point , took up absolutely no room in the engine bay (apart from the compressor that was just a sanden Jobbie , common and cheap),The entire assembly was lot lighter , cheaper , much more efficient (even for dust sealing) cheaper to run , reliable , cant work out why they didnt become standard ? Even Jeff Stubbs , a landrover Knob ,said they were far superior to the standard issue and wanted one to trial in his perentie 6 X 6 when we did trials with it in the Pilbara.circa 85-87 methinks
Dont know if that helps with Air-con vents and heater matrix , but a trip to wreckers for $100 second hand will improve it out of sight .

My local parts guru has just recommended that I replace the vacum on the hot water inlet with a tap. I know that having to open the bonnet to activate the heater sounds a bit odd but having a Landover is a like hitting youself with a birtch stick anyway.The local auto barn has them that can have a cable attached. How does that sound?

It will work, if somewhat less than convenient. Another option for a heater tap is a small ball valve from the hardware with a couple of 5/8 barbed hose tails.
