    VDO Boost buzzing noise

    I'm in the process of choosing a boost gauge ATM, decided between VDO and Autometer.

    It'll be this type VDO, 0-30 PSI




    Although I prefer this type calibration but can't find it anyone easily.

    I think I'd prefer the VDO in keepings with a D1 dash, it's going in a mud pod above the stereo with three other VDO gauges. The look great with a blue sleeve over the backlight globe. My only reservation is the alarming number of reports that the VDO gauge makes a buzzing noise in use whereas the Autometer doesnt. Most of the problems with the VDO have been cured with the use of an appropriate restrictor in the line. I plan to tap into the inlet manifold and set up the wastegate for 17PSI at the manifold.

    What'd be your choice? Has anyone found the VDO gauge buzzes?


    PS. Done the Auber Instruments thing before, would prefer real gauges this time around.

    I've got a VDO cockpit vision 0-30 Psi boost gauge and, fitted with a restrictor, no ticking whatsoever. The restrictor is just a plastic insert with a pin sized hole in it. Mine came with a VDO line kit, but you can easily make your own.

    I have the VDO 0-30, no buzzing from mine.
    I don't have a restrictor, the length of small diameter plastic line appears to do the job itself.

    I have a VDO 0-15psi gauge (I wanted the nice large scale it has, and everyone assured me a 300Tdi only boosted to 14.5-15psi. Mine went to 15.5, and now goes further again....) and have never had a peep out of it, but i suspect I have a restrictor too (fitted far too many years ago to remember)

    Thanks guys. VDO it is. I spoke to a stockist this morning and the one with the finer scale is from a different range and is side-lit, not back-lit, otherwise the same.

    Rick - there's a bloke on youtube who turbo'd a 300D MB and fitted one of each of the gauges. The 0-15 is used for inlet pressure and the 0-30 for drive pressure. A bit Wayne Kerr for a Discovery and I reckon it'd still blow off the scale at the manifold.

    You've also got the mechanical coolant temp gauge IIRC? I've ordered one of those as I don't trust the earthing/power supply at all.

    Yep, there's a piccy of them both in the dash on one of the recent Defender watertemp gauge threads, not really much help with a Disco

    Although it will look a bit dicky having the stock gauge inoperative. Might put a 1" LCD TV there.

    Yeah, but I 'clock' my gauges so the needles all point the same way when things are normal.
    That's what we used to do back when gauges were analogue on race cars, so you'd have the tacho redline vertical, etc (if that's the way you clocked them)
    Just meant that anything odd was noticed without looking.

    A touch of the Wayne Kerr's these days though, to be sure
