    Icom Ic400Pro squelch help

Hope someone might be able to help me here. I've finally worked out how to adjust the squelch, but which way?
Is a higher number more squelch or less?
I read somewhere that about 80 is the ideal level, love to hear from someone here who actually knows about this stuff.

The lower the squelch setting the weaker the signal and the more interference the set will receive.

On the lower settings you will hear white noise. Increase the squelch to a higher setting until the white noise stops. That is then the optimum. However if you are still receiving signals that are unintelligable then raise it some more to exclude the weak signals.

The squelch setting is useful when you are travelling in convoy and want to exclude extraneous weaker signals on the frequency that the convoy is using.
