Can you run a diesel jeep on avtur? (the old jet-a1) - Bio Fuels Forums
Bottom line, are the potential savings greater than the cost of 5 unit injectors and an injector pump???
Hey all... as the title says, running Jet A1 fuel in a TD5, give me your best and worst opinions!

no, bad plan dont unless you're going to doctor your fuel.

Whats the cost of an injector? $1500 each?
Easo
dont forget the pump, lines and FPR.

Isn't Jet A1, kero based and IIRC kero is abrasive ??
If you had read the link I posted:
Note that SAE #2 diesel is what we use in AU (or close enough), not SAE #1 Diesel.Jet-A1 is virtually identical to #1Diesel except for the lack of a lubricant.
Add the lubricant (2-5% Biodiesel has been shown to work) and you have #1 diesel. #1 Diesel is widely used in many parts of the World in the colder months for all diesel engines.
The US military is using JP-8 for all their Diesel's in Iraq. JP- 8 is Jet-A1 with three additional addetives which unfortunatly does not include a lubricant. This lack of lubricant in JP-8 has caused problems in Iraq.
Jet-A1 should be quite safe to use in any diesel engine that is suitable for operating with #1 Diesel as long as a Lubricant has been added to the fuel.
Check your Owners Manual and see if #1/Winter Diesel is allowed to be used in your car
Well, it is highly illegal, because you are not paying the correct taxes, in saying that everyone will tell you its a bad idea. However if you are getting the avtur at the right price (like free) then some people may not think it is such a bad idea, You may need to change your fpr but lets face it they go all the time using avtur or not. Now i'm not saying ive done it for the past 5 years, but i reckon if you did you wouldn't experience any difference in power, no noticeable change egt's ( might be cooler but unconfirmed) no problems with fuel pumps or lines as i said you may need to change an fpr but whose to say that was avtur related. now running straight avtur probably will stuff your engine but if it was mixed 50 to 1 with engine oil, then a bit of dieso whenever you are out on the road surely it can't be too bad but i'm no mechanic or engine guru and havn't tried it myself
. but lets say that you do 25000 k's a year and drive a 130 with fuel economy of 10k's a litre (pretty crap but hey maybe your car weighs 3 tonne)thats 2500 litres of fuel a year, then say you live in the desert and diesel is $1.43 a litre, that is $3575 a year on fuel, then say you did it for 5 years thats pretty close to $18 000 dollars in 5 years, price of a fpr is couple of hundred and bit of oil is maybe a few hundred too. so instead of paying 18000 dollars in fuel you pay maybe a 1000 tops on oil and maintenance. Then in theory maybe not such a bad idea but hey i have never tried it so don't know

IF you doctor the fuel and get the lube package correct you can run it.
I would NOT run it in a TD5. even if you were getting it free and didnt put any lube package in so it s of no cost for you each injector is worth 1500 lets say that a full tank costs you $100 in order for you to come out infront in this situation you have to do 15 full tanks in order to get in front for the cost of one fuel injector.
If one fuel injector goes because you've been using the wrong fuel in it generally the others arent going to be too far behind. so thats now 7500 worth of fuel that you have to burn through. What about the fuel pump? thats between 9 and 17 hundred dollars for a replacement complete unit.
so lets say a comfy $9k to completely redo the fuel system (assuming that the lines and the Fuel pressure regulator dont go at shorter intervals) I used to average about 700K to a tank so lets say 90 x700 for 63000Km that you'd have to do with no damage to the fuel system in order for using AVtur or jet A1 to be of advantage over using plain old diesel.
That of course also assumes that your jet fuel doesnt take out an injector seal and give you a first hand example of a runaway diesel.
