No, you can get the shafts rebuilt. They are just 1300 size unis. I'd take it somewhere else.

I would ditch the place that told you it was not rebuildable!
I tracked down the Uni's and ball joint here is Aust only to be disapointed at the price. I then picked up a "set" from the US for less than AUD$90 delivered.
There is a very good thread here on overhauling the double cardin joint that includes part numbers etc.
Best of luck, Toad.
Was 1/2 way through the Canning when my front shaft gave out. I was carring 2 new uni's as spares, brought from British Off Road for $30 each. Rebuilt the carbin joint on the floor of my campa that night and away next morning. Nearly back to QLD now & still going well.
On the way back I called into a well known land rover place in Adelade and asked for 2 uni's to put into my spares kit. They said they don't stock the uni's as the shafts are not repairable but they do sell new shafts for $450. I told them the above story and they insisted I was VERY lucky. Must have been the extra desert dust that helped.
Must have been all that BULL dust , eh ?
For the OP, check out the good oil.
The Uni's are easy enough to do, but don't forget the little alignment 'eyeball' bearing in the middle of the joint. The outer race can be a real bugger to get out. I ended up taking my disassembled shaft to the local Hardy Spicer.
As others have mentioned, don't go near your first point of contact as their knowledge of industry standard equipment is obviously lacking...
