300TDI died while driving, wont restart.

My disco died on the last Thursday while i was driving to work and i couldnt restart it. My first thought was the inj. pump solenoid lead but it was on and tight, i cracked the fuel line on the number 1 injector and there is no fuel spraying out. Once i got it home i drained the sedimenter and replaced the fule filter it case it was crap in the fuel which i just filled up while on my way to work. Also thought it could be the timing belt but after removing the rocker cover there are no bent pushrods and tappets are operating and valves opening and closing so if it has failed it must be just some worn teeth on the belt and possibly the inj. pump is now out of timing. Just about to have a read thru RAVE but not sure where else to look as there were no symptoms and car has been driving fine as per normal - no strange noises etc. Open to suggestions and ideas.

I'd investigate the pump solenoid further.
Have you actually checked for power at the solenoid?
If there's power, can hear the solenoid working?
Are you getting fuel delivered from the lift pump when you crank it?

I'd have thought there would be fuel when you cracked the injector even if the timing was out.

I also suspected the lift pump but i'm getting fuel into the filter its working, power to solenoid is also a suspect and will check with a multimeter before i go pulling the timing cover off or at least checking the inspection hole for belt condition.

Take the oil filler cap off and see if the rockers are moving while someone cranks it.I'd also check power to the solenoid. My Tdi went onto three cylinders the other day but I was filling it out of jerry cans and a filter change-water trap clean out fixed it. Pat

Just run a wire from the +ve terminal on the battery direct to the solenoid for testing. If it fixes the problem then you can work back from there as to the electrical/wiring issue.

I've had the same thing turned out was something scewed up with the wire to the solinoid. Was saying 12v on a multi meter but was not enough to get it working. ended up running a new wire from ignition to solinoid problem solved.

Just did that and it started so i am relieved its not anything more drastic, i checked my handbook but couldnt find if there is a fuse related to the solenoid power. Now to trace back the wiring to see where the problem lies - i'm sooooooooo relieved its not more serious .

    Good news!
It could just be a corroded connector onto the solenoid (corroded in the terminal/wire)
If you've got voltage there, try re-terminating it.

I cut the old plug off the wire and connected the lead but no good so i measured it with a multi meter and i'm only getting 0.01V with ignition on .
Looking at the wiring diagram on RAVE this wire traces back to the alarm spider unit so i might locate that and see if there is power directly out of it and that will let me know if its in the engine loom that is where the problem is or in the spider unit itself.
