    lurchs power steering problem update.....

after pressure testing the power steering system trying to find if a hose was leaking......
testing for a blown seal or porous hose.......without any luck......

i decided to actually take the fan belt off.......and then found the problem straight away......
the pump bearings have collapsed and the pulley is flopping around....sucking in air.......

ill pick up a new pump tomorrow......and fit it over the weekend.....

what i noticed whilst under my bonnet is.......the belt groove section on the crank shaft pulley has a few mm of movement compared to the actuall pulley........

is it supposed to move to absorb some sort of harmonics......or do i need to also replace my crankshaft pulley.......????

    the harmonic balancer.

yes but you shouldnt normally be able to move it by hand... (with a lever different story)

a mm or 2 or radial movent is ok (well I'd let it slide in the field) but I dont like letting them go if you can get lateral movement out of them by the bare hand

Definitely shouldn't have movement. There is the potential for the outer section coming off and going through the radiator.

They can be reconditioned, try Ross Balancers in Blacktown. He reco's and makes replacement (steel or alloy) pulleys and balances, does great work. I actually have one of his alloy pulleys on my D2 after misplacing one during it's rebuild.

its radial movement just on the section the belt runs on........the pulley itself is firmly fixed to the crank without any movement.........

it should be fine for a while........itll have to be.......

i cant afford to touch that right now......im concentrating on the pump right now.....

    thats $350 out the door......
