Firestone Coilrite Airbags

After still more research, including dozens of pages on this forum dating back as far as 2007, I still have a few questions.

Rick130 recommended in about 2008, that the 5.5" x 11" Nissan Patrol Kit was the best choice for a 110 or 130.

I thought the internal diameter of my coils was about 5", so does that mean my measurement was off or that a tight fit is OK or even preferable.

My cab/chassis is probably lighter than a wagon when both are completely empty, so maybe my 13" unladen length is a bit longer than the unladen length on a wagon. Maybe I need a longer air bag than on a wagon.

So is it better for the diameter to be slightly smaller or slightly larger than the coils?

is it better for the air bag to be the full length of the available space or a bit shorter?

None of the threads that I could find dating back to 2007 specifically answered those questions.

My 6010 air bags and 2131 hose kit just arrived.

The air kit includes two 90 degree elbows with a female threaded connector such as would be fitted on an air hose to connect to a tyre valve. The fitting at the top of the air bag looks like a push in connector. It certainly won't connect to the elbow.

The inflation valve that is mounted on the body has a push in connection for the hose and the connection to the air bag looks similar. The description in the instructions says, "Install the elbow fitting to the air spring by screwing onto the inflation valve of the air spring finger tight." There is no inflation valve fitted to the air spring, just a push in connector.

Is the elbow used on a different air bag and just not needed here?

It seems obvious to me that is the case, but as I have said myself on occasions, just because something seems obvious does not mean that it is right. :)

I am not familiar with the kit, and so cannot comment on the elbow fittings. However, a reminder that the push in fittings rely on a good right angle cut to achieve a proper seal. Use a sharp blade and ensure the cut is at 90 degrees. ( or buy yourself a dedicated tube cutter from your airbag supplier ) Definitely no crushing type cutters, like sidecut pliers.

For a Defender with a 2" lift you need parts:
CR5028 - $325 inc GST
2xCC1011 - $33 inc GST each

CR5028 are the bags and CC1011 are the spacers to sit onto of the retaining bolts and under the bag.

I had seen your post during my research and was prepared to act on the information you had there, but it was reassuring to have a recent confirmation of your advice. :)

Perhaps you can help with something that I have not yet been able to get a clear answer to. The bag is 11". My springs are 13" unladen. So does that mean I need 2" of spacers? Some of the information I have found suggests that I do.

I'm guessing so, as Tombie suggested and as does the drawing in the installation instructions he linked to.

I never went ahead with the bags, even though I removed the inner springs from the 130 as i was going to go with a longer variable rate coil, but it never happened.

Just to ease my and others mind(s) , I inspected my PolyAirs today as I was changing the shocks as I have no cover over the normal bolt heads.

I let them down and lifted them up with screwdrivers to look at the area where the bolt heads are.
NOTHING.
The air bags have been in about 4 years and done about 30KK with maybe 8Kk over dirt and all the time pulling my 1997 Camp'o'matic.

There was hardly a scuff mark from the spring locking bar and the bolt heads and I could rub any mark there was off.

So don't worry be happy.
