Yes that is the Disco R380
Hi I am sure their is a conversion thread somewhere but did not find it on a quick search. How much work is it to put a 300TDI/R380 box from a rusted D1 into a 1990 RRC with a non-going 3.9 V8/4 speed Auto box [good box to be sold off to recover some money.] Surely there is a thread on this I have yet to find.
The Hi--low ratio & diff lock lever is forward of the gear lever, but on a Defender it is behind. but both have reverse to the right opposite 5th gear and down. So I guess this is a R380 box.
We purchased the D1 from E-bay for $2500 then found more rust than we thought. And have a good 1990 RRC with stretched timing chain at home, hence thinking of this conversion.

I have seen one like you describe, the owner is very happy with it. The only engineering is for the front engine mounts as they are welded to the chassis. Haven't seen a whole thread on this but it is a common enough conversion, mentioned often in posts here.![]()
so guys how long does the conversion take?
are their wiring issues?
are the engine mounts available or do we have to manufacture them?
gear box mounts are they the same?
1. A fair while. I am watching a local guy do the conversion at home and it has been happening for 6 months of spare time. How fast/good/fussy are you?
2. Of course. You remove the ECU and associated wiring and then adapt the remaining harness for run, start, charge and air con circuits. The D1 is next to you, use its harness as a guide/donor.
3. There are engine mounts on the D1 chassis in the right position. Measure carefully, remove carefully, refit by welding with a MIG welder.
4. Probably. Again, you have both vehicles so you check everything yourself FIRST using a tape measure to make sure.
Have you thought about putting the RR body onto the D1 chassis? (unless it's the chassis that's rusted out on the Disco)
No mucking about with mounts then.
You can also fit the D1 dash if you like too. It has a much better A/C / heater set up.

I put a 300tdi and auto into my 88 classic. Do a 2" body lift FIRST, then you have some space above the engine, at the firewall. With the body lift you can easily remove tappet cover etc.

thanks for your replies. We found diesel leaking out of the injector pump which is going to cost us $1700 with a new timing belt while they are at it, so our cheap Discovery is not so cheap after all--we looked at and purchased it while it was raining.
