    steering not selfcentering

    Hi all,
Have had a 2nd hand pump in now for a few weeks, but my steering still feels strange..Its nice and tight, turns immediately when you turn the wheel, but when it comes to straightening up,you have to turn the wheel to straighten up - it doesnt do it by itself anymore...
Can anyone give me a clue as to what could be happening please..and how to fix this problem.

    thanks

Usually this is caused by over adjusting the nut/bolt on top of the steering box.
Did you do that at the same time as the pump???
Another cause can be that a UJ on the column has tightened up.

    Hi Phillipa,

Didn't touch the box, only did the pump.Just read my workshop manual and it says to adjust the rockershaft screw to loosen it up a bit..Maybe a bit over tight.

    Thanks

It was always my understanding that the self centreing action was a function of toe in. A steering specialist would be able to check and adjust such if required, as can some tyre places, but given a choice I would prefer the former.

The worm on the steering box is self centering.Take the bottom fitting out of the pump and put a very thin allen key in it and feel if the plunger is moving in and out. Pat

Self centreing is a function of castor angle.

...And all D1 and RRC run 0 to 2mm toe OUT.

I would be looking at possibly a siezed/ bent damper, or as suggested the steering box is a litle tight. Also worth checking the steering column bottom unis as if they are seizing, the steering becomes stiffer, although this is usually accompanied by a loose-tight-loose-tight feeling while turning.

had a look at the steering box the other day and the marks on the top are just ever so slightly out of alignment--will get it aligned next week,so hopefully that will fix the problem..
thanks for all the possible causes...

    cheers
