    Q for Relay Dentist

I'm trying to trace the break in the rear window heater circuit - in a Defender 300tdi 110 wagon. I think it could be the relay, but I can't extract it! It is located under the fuse panel and looks like it should just pull out, but it's not moving and I don't want to break it.

Is there some special way to get these relays out?

Nigel, if I remember corectly, the relay socket can "slide" off the mounting bracket, just take it off so you can see what you are doing, then after disconnecting the battery, lever between the relay and socket with a screwdriver to remove it.
If it's not comming out I would think it probably is the problem, chances are it had a less than perfect connection to the socket and this has melted the socket a little, resulting in it being "glued" in. Demisters pull a lot of current, so it realy needs a good connection.
You will probably need to replace the relay and the socket afterwards as the spade connectors will have been heat damaged and will never connect well again.

    Cheers,

Thanks Fraser. Just went and had another look. The relay modules/boxes are made to slide together. The module itself is screwed onto the bottom of the fusebox and you have to remove the end relays in the module to get at the screws.

So, given your information, I carefully applied more pressure and was able to extract the relay.

The relay was/is fine. There was no continuous battery power supply (the heavy duty brown wire) to the relay. To fix the problem, I took a feed wire from the continuous battery power supply wire to the 'start relay' that is located nearby. So I still don't know what caused the failure.

The circuit diagram shows the battery power supply to both the 'rear window heat' and 'start' relays coming from the same junction. I couldn't find a junction box, so I'm thinking that the junction is actually a number of wires just twisted together somewhere in the harness.
    But, if so, where?

Does anyone know if there is a junction box or just a splice hidden in the harness?

    Thanks
