    O2 Sensors or no O2 Sensors?

    Hi. I am wondering if my disco should have O2 sensors or not.

    It's a 1996 3.9 and while it has standard headers, it has twin engine pipes (might be normal, dunno). It's running quite rich, floods on startup and often makes passengers feel a littel stoned on the fumes if some come into the cab.

    Bought the car a few months ago and have changed air filter and had new vacuum advance installed, but nothing else yet. All I can think of is there should be O2 sensor/s, but there are none installed.

    Have been considering upgrading ecu, installing a power amplifier (or whatever it is) and maybe changing the MAF for a newie (if they exist). Maybe also change exhaust system for freeflow headers and fatter main and tail pipe/s. It's all a bit costly, but might be worth it.

    Any valid ideas would be appreciated ?

    No O2 sensors until the D2. The ECU temp sender might be faulty, search to find its diagnostic resistances. It's the sensor with the twin wire plug near the front of the engine by the thermostat.

    As bee utey says, no O2 sensors fitted to Australia spec D1s, although you can retrofit them. If you do a search you should find a few threads on this site detailing how people have done it.

    There is also a lot of information about how you can set the EFI system for smoothest and most economical running. Searching TPS and MAF should give some hits.

    Having said that, don't expect miracles, a V8 D1 will never win any economy awards.

    The basics are ...
    Make sure that the motor comes up to temp ... IE thermostat works and the temp gauge gets to half way

    Measure with a multimeter that the Temp sender unit works .... Located just in front of the passenger side front Injector (piston number 1) .... fitted to the intake manifold / same twin wire plug as the injector
    Should measure 5000 Ohms when cold ... 300 "odd" Ohms when motor at temp .... A Rave CD (workshop manual) from "Shop" (look at the top of your screen on this browser) .... will help you big time


    Remove the MAF .... Take off the large C clip holding the wire gauze mesh ... Look inside the MAF and you will see a 6mm hole ... shine a torch in the hole and you will see a light globe type filament ... clean that wire with a spray of circuit board cleaner .... Reassemble


    Advance the Dizzy to 9 degrees
