no it's the crank driven variety.
Oh and I spoke too soon, the missus just reported it took 20 secs for the oil light to go off
So back to the beginning, it's not the filter
Phillip, how could the pressure relief valve contribute to this issue - by jamming in the housing and failing to open soon enough I guess, thus preventing initial oil flow to the engine?
Thanks again for the advice.

oil pressure relief valve is basically inaccessible and require front cover off which is a big jobbie.
Engine/OP supplier has agreed to send the vehicle to an expert for assessment - so we'll see what is up soon.
I'll report back as this one is an interesting issue and may reveal some lessons for all LR owners
.
Thanks for the replies.

checked OP - took 10 secs to get a reading then went to 40psi, 50 when revved.
Immediate re starts pressure went to 40 immediately. After an hour, took 10 sec to get pressure rise, again to 40psi.
Intereesting post I found re same problem. Note gasket issue. Mine is a 3.9 cover on a 4.oL block. I wonder.......
had the same problem with the engine I fitted in my TR7 V8. I knew that the engine was a good one as it came out of my other TR7. The the tappets on the right had bank would rattle on start up and oil pressure was slow to build up and if took the engine over 4000 it would start rattling. I traced it down to the front cover gasket being the wrong one. There are three holes in the front cover, the lower one is the oil pick up from the sump, the one above connects internally with the lower hole and the top one is oil out to the engine. When I took the cover off the gasket should have a circle to blank off the middle hole as there isn't a corresponding one on the block, the one I had fitted just had a staight section and only covered 3/4 of the hole. The gaskets my mate had given me was for a 4.0 litre engine with a serpentine front cover, I had just stuck it on the block and not noticed the diffirence. Fitted the correct gasket and the oil pressure now comes up instantly and have no more rattles. I guess the engine was sucking in air and affecting the oil feed, even though the pressure was showing ok on the gauge. Hope this is of some help
