I believe that the 4HP22 in a Disco 1 can have the ?valve block? modded to make it lock up in 3rd.
I think JC was have this mod done by some one in Vic, it would be worth asking him.

one of my D1 discos had this done by previous owner. they are Manuel Automatics Pty Ltd, Thomastown, Vic. (03) 9466 4499. excellent for towing heavy loads.

i believe the D2 has a torque converter lockup in 2nd gear as well as third and fourth.
probably noone else has bothered trying it, but mine does if i drop it to 2nd on a log climb while towing.

You can mod almost anything on an electronic transmission.
I recall there was a kit around to lock up Nissan Patrols in low ratio.

If you bought a 4HP24E and fitted a controller from Ashcroft, You could probably program the trans to lock up when you wanted, subject to strength considerations, and maybe even have a lock up switch as per Nissan Patrol.
But you would have to consider whether it was all worth it.

Really! ? ... cool. I'll try it next time I'm out.

If so, then you've got 7 ratio's to play with (2nd lockup being accessed by keeping the stick in "2" on the shifter ... same as 3rd lockup).

    1-2-2Locked-3-3Locked-4-4Locked.

So the procedure would be to start off the line with the stick at 2 ... accelerate 1, 2, 2Locked, then shift the stick to 3rd .... 3rd lockup, then shift to 4th ... 4th lockup.

As for the D1 auto 3rd lockup modification, I reckon that should be a must have if your towing. Your vehicles transmission would be so much happier & cooler towing in 3rd locked than 4th slipping it tits off
