Lotsa people do a second battery in the back. Just run decent cables and a good isolator and you'll be fine. I would consider running the earth cable to the back of the transfer case as ally is a good conductor.

Is there anything stopping me from having my second battery fitted in the cargo area of my Disco 1?? Obviously, I'd opt for one of the leak free job's or whatever they are.
Unfortunately, it's the only place it will fit, as the gas system has forced me to move the airbox forward into the space which would usually house the second battery.
Now of course, it will be secured correctly and tightly in the cargo area, as I'm custom building some storage solutions around my gas tank which is also in the back. The cargo area is also going to house the compressor for my air lockers when they get here, and my sub and amp too. Most likely, the second battery, amp, and the compressor will be hidden from view in secret, yet still accessible, compartments.
So, oh wise members of the forum, is there anything that would/could stop me having the second battery in the back??

If you feel you might want the space at some point, wire it in so you can unplug the battery. Use the anderson plugs or similar so you can pull it out.
After Seeing EANS's post and pics of the exploding batteries on his trawler, makes me think I would not like exploding acid anywhere inside a cabin. ( but a Rare occurance)
I have always had my 2nd battery ( a sealed Fullriver deep cycle) in the back since the Intercooler pipework used the LH battery tray space up...it is better IMHO as mine is close to fridge, HF radio, power outlets etc etc.
As mentioned make sure you have excellent wiring to avoid volt drop.

Drivesafe's isolators or a Redarc (I have the latter).
I'm wiring up the back of a 74 RRC to run multiple rechargeable things (and fridge) off a second battery up front using 8g power and earth cables. Overkill for sure, but I am pretty sure the lack of voltage drop will pay for the cable ($30?) in short time.

I'm not a fan of cooking a battery next to a turbo system so recently installed an AGM battery in the l/h rear space where the internal bin goes.
My TD5 doesn't have the actual bins as it is a base model but, the space was just the right size to fit a 2nd battery. I bought a heavy duty battery box and secured it with a nylon strap. The battery sits within and I bought an installation kit from the guys at Traxide that includes everything you need for additional power points as well as 2 anderson plugs for external use.
It wasn't a difficult installation and I'm pleased with the end results. Took it for a test run over a weekend of very rough roads and it is completely secure and didn't move. While we were out I deliberately over loaded the AGM battery with fridge, lights, laptop and phone charger. It performed 100% and lasted 30 hours without charging (Could've gone longer but we ran out of time so it got recharged on the trip home).
With this in mind - I can recommend AGM batteries as well as the good folk at Traxide who support AULRO members with a quality product.
Hi Brenno mines in the back too and is removable via an anderson plug, great for carring to the tent or van when you need too and only take a few seconds to remove and use as a jump start.
