Cool Bloody squeak in the TD5 engine

My TD5 Defender has a squeak somewhere in the front of the engine. I cannot find it. The engine is a fully reconditiond short motor, cylinder head has been reconditioned, new exhaust manifold gasket and studs, turbo has been replaced, new fan bearing and I still can't get rid of that bloody squeak. The harmonic balancer appears fine running true and no vibrations. If I remove the serpentine belt I still can't get rid of the bloody squeak. If anyone has any more ideas I'd love to hear them. Even the Landrover dealers are beat. (although they usually operate mostly on guess work and $1000s of your hard earnt readies.)

Is the squeek in time with the engine, constant, or does it come and go? You say 'reconditioned' when talking about the head.... Did they skim the face?

Is squeek = squeal? I have had a squeal under load that sounded 100% like belt issues but turns out to be a leaking exhaust gasket. Came on at about 2200-2500RPM under load.

Bloody Squaek in the TD5 Engine.

The cylinder head was fully done over. All surfaces were skimmed. An excellent job. The noise is there at start up and idle. Increases in frequency with RPM increase and is always there under load. Back off the throttle and it goes away, put the power back on and the damn noise is back.

Bloody annoying noise in TD5 engine.

Yep, the stethoscope is a great idea. I intend to pick one up on my next trip into Repco or similar. Very handy for lots of different engines. I love the TD5 but they certainly are a challenge to sort out. I have 54 Austin Champ that was extremely easy to completely rebuild from the ground up compared to teh diagnostics in teh TD5. Main mechanical jobs are easy but diagnosing little annoying issues like the squeak drive me nuts.

You have a champ Champ54?! Or had? I still have about 2.5 of them! In pieces! Looking for a good rear Crown wheel and pinion.
Sorry sorry - the TD5 squeak! I had the exhaust manifold leaking sounding just like a squeak. More under load as there's more gas through (foot down). I would go that #1. What about alternator and other auxilaries that were not reconditioned with engine?
Also the idler/tensioner on the serpentine fan belt.

    Hi Davros,
I have a fully restored Ex BAOR 54 Champ. Stripped to the very bare chassis, everything abrasive blasted, restored, repainted and rebuilt. It's also fitted with an operational C42 radio set. I also have a 55 Ex Australian Champ under restoration. Sorry I can't assist with the rear crown and pinion. Bill Miller in Victoria is able to convert the front crown and pinion if you can find one. As for the TD5 if I remove the serpentine belt the noise still persists so it has to be either the harmonic balancer (which definate looks OK and does not show any signs of the centre having let go) or the exhaust, or something internal (yuk). Cylinder head has been skimmed on all surfaces, new gaskets all round, new manifold studs and nuts and no signs of leaks. EGR is removed.
