    Rebore , Ball park Cost?

    Hello All
Recently bought a 3.5 V8 motor from these here classifieds , low mileage , one lady owner oil changed twice a month etc . Anyway I know the score sold as seen and it looked a bit rough but I thought why not . Now i've stripped it and there is a groove at the top of the cylinder liners , have honed at home with a honing thingy and you can still feel a bit of a groove no matter how much beer I drink , also a couple of pistons have little dinks on the tops .
This tells me rebore so what should I expect to pay for a rebore as in "heres the block mate " and what about pistons , have heard Holden 253 pistons fit but seem hard to find and don't seem cheap either . Sorry for the ball ache but have just spent the last 2 weekends stripping the motor down so feel a bit of a mug , which in fact I am !
    Thanks Guys

Hi it's Holden 173 pistons that used to be fitted. But nowadays I wouldn't dream of doing that. Rover parts from England are cheaper than that. Quite frankly, the depth of the score could be minimal even if you can feel it, so try to get a measurement of it. Cheaper is to try again with another second hand engine, such as a 3500 SD1, a rebore would cost a lot more.

    Thanks Beeutey
Mate was hoping to get away with mains/big ends and rings and a new timing chain . So all is not lost with a little groove maybe . Can I sand the pits out of the pistons as well . Am not intending of sinking to much into this as its just a small project !
    Thanks Garfy

You will probably find that the groove was caused by a broken piston ring, which would account for the pitted piston. Usually the piston ring lands will be shot and require a new piston anyway, suggest you get a rebore, new pistons and rings. Not doing so might be more expensive in the long run, Regards Frank.
