200tdi engine problams, burning oil-masive amount of blowby..

    Hi all

I have spent the weekend out driving the tracks behind coffs with the GCLRO Club, only to have the engine start to give in today
On saturday it was starting to smell abit oily and blowing a bit oif blue smoke, i started it up the smorning it was only chugging away on 3 cylinders, once warmed up it ran pretty close to normal, just a tiny bit under powered compared to usual.
But it was starting to blow more and more blue smoke and really starting to smell oily so we checked it out, oil was being forced out the cap due to the crankcase pressurising, when we got home i started it up with the cap off this is what was going on..

    (Click on pic for video)

Obviously it looks to be a problam with the rings, but the thing is, if it has that much blowby and is using heaps of oil why does it run and idle close to normal when hot? as soon as it cools down it starts to chugg alot more but when it is hot it runs fine
Could it be the rings and pistons expanding with heat and alowing the rings to seal up abit better?
Could it be a problam somewhere else?

I will hopefully be able to do a compression test on tuesday but thought i'd see if anyone might have a better idea of what the main problam may be

    Thanks in advance........CHEERS TIM.

Blocked crank case breather maybe? if the breather wasnt blocked even with buggered rings it still wouldnt pressurise the crank case. Dont ask me where it is, it just seems that if the crank case is pressurising it wouldnt be venting properly.

Tim, don't worry just yet, it is more than likely a head gasket failure into the crankcase. This will give similar symptoms the main thing is DON"T keep driving it incase it tries to run on its own oil Its about time for a headgasket anyway....

..Gee, First time I've been thanked for such a dire diagnosis

Don't worry Tim, happens to all Tdi's at some point. At least it is an easy fix

Looks like a holed piston or absolutely no rings at all, I wouldn't run it like that in case it starts running on sump oil, Regards Frank.

If this was the case wouldn't you think it would be running like an apsalute dog?
When hot at idle it run's pretty much the way it should

Besides the blown head gasket blowing through to a lifter bore and into the sump I can't think of anything else that would cause that much blowby, regardless do not run the engine, it may get away on you. Pull the glow plugs and the wire to the fuel cut off solenoid on the pump and wind it over and observe what comes out, if you have a compression tester (diesel engine) use it, good luck, regards Frank.

Tim, good news after watching the Vid, (I couldn't see it yesterday with the sloww home connection) it is a head gasket failure, textbook into the lifter gallery/ crankcase. I'll say between number 3 and 4 cylinder area.

Have you got it off yet????
