A Puma oil on handbrake observation

I have noticed a few Pumas with binding park brakes/ vibrations pop up on here and at work, and today actually found a / the cause while servicing a '10 model, at 14,000km old.

The main output flange nut was loose. So was the tailshaft and park brake drum.
The oil had made its way down the splines, out from behind the washer and nut, and flung out by centrifugal force into the inside of the park brake drum.

Luckily the holes and bolts etc hadn't flogged out, socleaned it out, retightened everything, sealant under the washer and all new tailshaft Nylocs (Always do this, I buy them by the box of 200) and hopefully that is the last I'll see of that issue with this vehicle.

My advice to everyone is to look carefully at the rear output area of your Puma, and tighten EVERYTHING.

Interestingly, this was also noticeable driving it as it had an extra 'tinggg' when on and off the throttle. That'd be the tailshaft and the rear output flange moving on its spline.

I've noticed that on a brand new transfer case. Not good.

Leaking along the splines has always been a LR trait though from what I've seen.

Certainly has Scott, but NOT from a new range of vehicles, until now. I have tightened, replaced and cleaned many on other models, but at least they (D1&2, RRC,Def etc etc)had some miles under their belts before they started to do this.

Not very impressive I can tell you.

    Loose nut, bad vibes

    Hi Justin

one of the down sides of having a strong Aussie dollar is that one must wait for the couriers to clean out their sheds!!!
My box on wheels is waiting for some cheap parking brake shoes from the UK, coming up to the end of the forth week!!
on the other hand I brought a heap of stuff from Turner Engineering, UK came by DLS after ordering late one Thursday night, arrived early the following Monday.
I need one of those nylocks, can I please, please

    Cheers Arthur

    Leak

Hi Justin how complicated is this? Drive shaft off handbrake drum off and tighten offending nut, then reverse? Or am I missing something important?
    Thanks Justin,
    Justin.

Oil actually leaks down the splines and past the nut, into the hand brake area. Mine was also leaking at 7500kms. I sealed this with a loctite product.

    Hi Justin, Its Justin

yes, shaft off, nut and washer off, discard useless felt washer under the washer, then clean up, and apply a good silicone type sealant like Wurth 250, and refit in reverse order. The flange nut needs to be at least 100Nm, not sure off the top of my head the actual torque figure, I'll take a look at RAVE tomorrow.

JC, I fixed the issue early on with the nylocs coming loose by using aircraft 'K' Nuts (all metal, self locking, reduced hex nuts)

Never needed touching in nine years now.

Might be a bit OTT but I had a packet of new ones left over (100 ??) from another lifetime.
