clutch in or out of gear???

was having the debate with a mate if its better to hold the clutch in while sitting at the lights or be out of gear then pu tin gear when the green lights up???
is 2 clutch movements better than holding it in for 1-2 minutes???

I was taught to put it in Neutral. The springs are better off flexing twice than being held taut. My clutch is too heavy to hold in long anyway!
You are also less likely to move half a car space because an impatient driver creeps in front of you, if you aren't in gear.

Think about the consequences should your car be rammed from behind whilst you are sitting at the lights.

I thought part of the problem with holding the pedal down was that the clutch release bearing which is designed for intermittent use is subjected to sustained use.

However that may just be an impression formed when I owned my Austin A40, which I believe had some sort of carbon block as a release bearing instead of a ball race.

I think zulu's point about the possible consequences of being nudged from behind is pretty convincing.

When you hold the clutch in for extended periods you are forcing the crankshaft forward onto the front thrust bearing causing undue wear on the bearing and crank,
put the box into neutral and and your foot off the clutch pedal when stopped, Regards Frank.

I always go for neutral at the lights, except if I am in the front row and I can't see when my turn is. Most times you are either back in the queue or know when your lane's turn is coming up.

I flick the auto into angel whenever I'm stopped. Any one who is miltary trained will always go to neutral any time they stop......wont they?
