How to unstick a steering wheel?

I am commiting a slight outrage by replacing my 85 County steering wheel with a later defender steering wheel. It seems the Gods are not impressed and no matter what I do I cannot get the old county wheel to budge.Any tips?

Steering wheels often need some help coming off. A puller is the best option - it is easy to fabricate one for the steering wheel using a steel plate and a few nuts and bolts.

    300tdi - 4-8pm steering wheel probably won't fit.

Leave the bolt on by a few threads, when they come off they come at you fast.

You will have to change the whole steering column as well if you want the later steering wheel.

Andrew, our son did this to his County - wasnt a pleasant job from memory with a lot of cursing.

Not necessarily. I bought a later Defender steering wheel off Tusker and fitted it to my '84 County. It was a perfect fit. I merely removed the old wheel, checked the number of splines matched, then fitted the new wheel.

Good source of info: Web Rover

There is now a 4th wheel though that is also a Type C design (like Ron's picture above) and that is on the Puma but instead of a 36 spline count it is a 48 spline.
