    tensioner bearings and the like...

    Howdy all,

    Just pulled the tensioner pulley off my td5 defender, as it sounds like it's ready to give up, thought i would do the rest of the pulleys as well. Being a novice i'd like to know how i can tell if they actually need replacing or just some fresh grease in them, and do i need a press to get them out or is there an easier way... like bashing them with a hammer???

    any other tips that may come in handy are most welcome...

    Try searching for 'td5 idler pulleys' or similar or maybe have a look in 'the good oil' and all will be revealed.

    Generally speaking if it is rough, rattles or seems loose it is time to replace them.
    Firstly these bearings are usually non greasable and are pregreased and sealed at the manufacturers. They do need to be handled with care and dont like being hit or pressed in the wrong place and can be destroyed if treated this way. If you have no experience with these things or dont have anyone to show you or demonstrate how to fit a new bearing to the tensioner ( as opposed to fitting a new tensioner), try here for some good info.
