    TD5, Running in oil

G'day all, I am in the process of rebuilding my TD5, I replaced the rings and bearings after breaking the compression rings and damaging the piston in No 1.

I have always run the engine on Mobil 1 oil, after reading the Turner Engineering website they recommend using a running in oil for the first 500km to help bed in the rings before running on a synthetic. Turner Engineering Running in oil

As I live in Dubai I cannot find a dedicated running in oil, so am tempted to run it on a mineral oil for the first 500km, then get it back onto Mobil 1 again. My only worry is the turbo, have also shouted it a new VNT I dont want to risk damaging the bearings on it either and want to be running it on a good synthetic straight away.

Any ideas or thoughts of what best to use, go Mobil 1 straight away or use a mineral initially to help bed in the rings.

I love this topic and you will get lots of different opinions.

I used this method the last time I ran in an engine. and my mate had good success with this on a tractor engine so I can't see why it would on a TD5.

I would go with a mineral and load up the engine and change the oil and filter after 150km. Then change again at 1500 km. keep it clean is the Key.

    IMHO.

Use a good quality Mineral oil that is suitable for Turbo'd small diesels, dont allow engine to idle, keep the revs up a bit and really use the engine keep it working.
Rings bed into the bore and create a seal by compression gasses forcing the rings to conform to the bore. If you let the engine idle excessively (even after running in) the rings will not be forced onto the bore surface as hard as when the engine is under load and revving with bore glazing, blowby and excessive oil consumption the end result. So don't let idle too much or run at high speed (Freeway 110) with no load, vary the revs on a long trip, don't sit the engine at the same revs for long periods.
Keep an eye on oil consumption, check oil in the same spot each time to get regular readings, drop the oil at 1500+klms, check the oil filter contents by pulling it apart and maybe depending on what shows up, repeat the process and if no loss of oil and filter reasonably clean, switch back to Synthetic and change oil and Filters at oil makers recommendation usually 10K, Regards Frank.

Thanks all, I will track down some mineral oil suitable for a TD today for when I first fire it up.

I had planned to load it up pretty well to bed in the rings, might even take it for an easy drive into the dunes to keep some load on it and see how the new VNT helps out low down.

Keeping the motor working is great, BUT don't put it in a situation where it might overheat, a new engine will run hotter so don't put it into a position that may cause overheating, that is working hard at low speeds, low airflow through radiator, like plugging up sand dunes, Regards Frank.

No probs, we have a few decent runs here in the sand that you can keep it rolling along pretty well without having to work it to hard, I would love to take it for a drive through the mountains to knock up the k's so I can get its first oil change done and out of the way, but it is over 100kms to get there running along the flat, so a gentle drive in the sand will serve it better I think otherwise I will be stuck in traffic around town which is not really ideal.
