Air Locker engages sometimes and sometimes doesn't

Hi all, I had an air locker installed about a month ago and have been having problems since. When the locker was installed it was all tested and everything locked as it should. I then went to find somewhere to test it out only to find the compressor wanted to run constantly. I hoped out and could hear and feel the air coming out of the diff breather. I drove back home and jacked one of the wheels up and locked the diff again and this time it all worked as it should.

So now sometimes when I engage the locker it locks and sometimes the compressor runs constantly and the air blows out the diff breather.

Has anyone else had this happen or know what the problem could be?

    Hi,
I'm no expert on this, but it sounds like air is escaping and not being held in the pneumatic engaging mechanism.
Simplest is the air-line has a crack or is not fully attached.
More complicated is perhaps an O ring is leaking.

If it was a commercial install, the first thing is perhaps to contact the installer.

    cheers

Take it back to the installer you paid to fit it and get him to fix it, Regards Frank.

We constantly hear of these O ring problems with the ARB. Sure some are incorrect fitting but others fail some time after installation so as they did work they were installed correctly.

Clearly a design issue with either the locker itself or the specified O ring is not up to the task.

So what are the options with this poor design aspect - too many of these issues are coming up to ignore.

I have one to go into the front of my 101 and I do not want to be pulling it out every year or so - it is just too big a job.

I had the same problem with an ARB, failed under warranty. They fixed it, they said it was the "O" ring & their supplier had changed the compound of their "O" rings & didn't tell them. That was over 10 years ago, no problems since. You can always tell when it not working [ apart from the obvious ], you can smell diff oil.
Good luck, you should be OK when they fix it.

oi...landrover seem to ignore all there design faults so maybe its catching on

mine are somewhere between 6 and 15 years old and are still going strong, when i disengage i get a whift of oil returned to the solinoid

i think the design has changed a little these days but whoever installed them should right it for you

I bought one from ARB in Bayswater about 10 years ago, it had been on the shelf about 2 years when purchased and the O-rings failed, as it sounds like yours have, not long after installing. They repaired it under warranty and no problems thereafter.
I had had a diff repairer set mine up, but when I went back to ARB I took in the diff centre complete and they agreed to do the setup in their workshop.
