    Defenders do not float

Had a great weekend in Abercrombie and decided to attempt a river crossing. Another vehicle went through just as we got there of which I could only see the rear as it exited teh water and turned up teh exit path so we thought we were good to go.

Got just over half way through when the vehicle stalled and water started coming in through the many gaps in a Defender. I exited through the front window onto the roof rack just as the front seat started floating.

After recover (by a Toyota which I won't live down) we towed the vehicle up a hill in order for the water to flow out of the exhaust. After a few turns the water was pushed out of the exhaust and the vehicle actually started (That's why I bought a Tdi and not the TD5).

We drained the engine oil and replaced the filters but seeing as the car was under water (bonnet height) for about half an hour there are a few things that aren't exactly as it was before going for a swim.

The temperature started going up when taking on some of the hills to get out of the Park, but only once. We added some oil and she was fine.

Driving back from Oberon the temp guage moved to sit just right from half (hair breadth) where it always was just shy of half.

I think most of the water is out but I will drain all the oils again including the gearbox etc. but on high revs going up a hill in 4th/5th doing about 90km/h there seems a bit of a wheezing noise as if the turbo is struggling to get the air through the airfilter.

So, I'm looking for some guidance on the following:

    1. Seeing as everything had water, what parts should I re-grease/lubricate whether engine or suspension related?
    2. Could the viscous fan not be working as it should anymore?
    3. Where would water congregate and not run our naturally when going up and down hills which would require some intervention?
    4. Do I need to drill a small hole in each door to drain water and if so where?
    5. What damage could have occurred (Have driven 250km since the swim and no other obvious issues)
    6. Anything else I should be aware of or keep an eye out for?
    7. What is the best spray-on lube?

    Thx

You need to investigate all the fluids that come out of the various locations. If any of the oils are milky or if they have water still in the housing you should use a flushing oil for about a week and then re-fill again with the regular oil.

Check the fuel tank as well. If there is any contamination you will need to flush the whole system. You can add some metho to petrol (not sure if you can do it to diesel) which is hydrophilic and will allow small levels of water contamination to pass through the filters and be burnt by the engine.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

    Dnnnt...

to about 60l of diesel add about 1l of 25/75 petrol metho mix...

the metho will mix with the oil the water and the diesel and the petrol will help over come the loss of oomph and the lowered performance of the contaminated diesel

    HOWEVER.

the fuel water seperator and the fuel filter should deal with water in the diesel drain these about every 100k or so till they stop "producing" water.

Nice part of the country that.

Were you crossing the Abercrombie River at the Beach? It was just above knee depth there when we were last there a few weeks ago.

Change your diff oils as well if your breathers are not extended: a hot diff will suck water in.
