Should be able to feel with your finger, or a small dental type mirror and torch is a good tool to see closely.
Sealant on the Oring is to be kept to a minimum and is only if you have to reuse the old one, or can't get the correct section. A small amount of Wurth 250, Permatex Ultra Blue, or similar oil resistant product will be sufficient.
DO NOT use lots, and none in the bore where the seal sits.
What was the seal number you were supplied with?

The seal I have is ERR4575 and the description on the invoice is "Oil Seal - Timing Cover - L/R 300 TDi (Crank Inner).
What does the inner refer to?
I also have the ERR 4576 which gowa into the actual timing belt cover. I just can't see how ERR4575 can fit into the bore. Obviously I'm missing something
The ERR4575 is the inner seal, behind the bottom crank gear. Can you post a pic?? It IS the right number, and it SHOULD fit in. Can you make sure you haven't been given an incorrectly packaged seal? ERR4575 should be written on the seal, what brand of seals are they?Quote:

I google the seal number and the images I get is consistent with what I've got.
Perhaps I have the right seal but I just can't see how it fits in the bore. It doesn't seem to have a lip that can fit over the edge of the bore??????
Pics please. I am now :confused:. These are pretty straightforward, just start the seal gently with thumb pressure, and then use the crank gear in reverse to push it into the housing.Quote:

Pardon my ignorance, but if the O ring slips over the crankshaft between the inner seal and the crank gear, what is it's purpose?
