    Top Up Maintenance Free Batterys

One of my starter batteries (maintenance free) seems to have low fluid levels. Is there a way that the fluid level can be topped up - there is no obvious way so I am assuming not.

My smart charger indicates the battery is Ok but the battery does loose charge to "low" as indicated on the smart charger in about a day and takes a few hours to bring it back up to "Full". When looking into the charge window on the battery, the fluid is right at the bottom and it is difficult to tell what colour the the indicator is.

Normally low fluid would indicate high charging rates but this battery is charged with another battery (the same type, brand etc) in series and the other battery is OK.

    Thanks

Without stating the bloody obvious - I think you have asked and answered all of your own questions within 1 post Garry

OK - replace your maintenance free starter battery as it is U/S.....and NO, you really can't maintain a maintenance free battery.

(The colour 'window' is simply a basic resistance indicator and very much 'hit and miss')

Battery World at Fyshwick will check your dodgy battery free of charge with commercial test equipment. I have no afinity to this business !

Thanks - In know I think I know everything but the reality is somewhat different - hence the question just in case I had missed something.

I had heard that someone did have a method but I cannot find anything on it.

    Cheers

Sort of OT Garry, but did you find the starting issue with the 101 yet? Interested to hear what the problem is/was.
Also OT, but where are the pics of the Etype in your sig??? Well????

for all the hassle of getting the top off, re filling and then sealing it, to gain a possible extra 6 months use out of it I dont think its would be worth it. Get a new one and be confident that you will always be able to start. The little "window' is actually a hydrometer, but it only checks one cell. Gives an indication, but not a truely reliable one of the health of the whole battery.

Not yet - been tied up with other stuff. I have tried using my deep cycle (allrounder) and starter pack to turn it over but it didn't work - so without a good set of batteries I am not sure - I might connect the allrounder with the good battery with proper connections and see what happens tomorrow afternoon.

I suspect the second starter battery is not holding charge under load but my smart charger (maybe it is not so smart) seems to think it is OK but I have not left the battery on maintenance charge for the required 24 hours at this stage - it needs this time frame before it goes into recondition mode.

It depends on the type of "maintenance free" battery.Quite a lot of them have plastic covers hidden under the stickers on top of the battery. If it is this type, then you can just use something with a flat edge and lift the cover, and gain access to the cells to top them up,then just put the covers back on.

how did you go with this issue garry ? you can access the acid well in these type of battery quite easy with a 10 cent peice use it as a screwdriver in the slot on the indicator eye and screw it out then top up the battery with demin water then re fit the eye and charge the battery on a real charger somthing that has a good current output of 8 amps or better tho you have to keep an eye on the amp meeter and the float voltage of the battery once it hits 15 volts stop charging and you should be right to go

    Thumbs up

Had my allrounder battery for 4 years going on to 5 years now and its as good as new. But after 12 months. You take the stickers of the top of the battery there you find 6 screws thats where you can refill the battery i had to top mine up once a year so far. its been used in a boat for 3 years then my car for about 1 year, Now its been used to run my electric motor on my kayak. I used a cheap battery charger from supper cheap a 3 stage 4amp is all it is. But i do have a Solar setup that i put it on to once every 3 Months it keeps it better maintained then cheap charger does. I have other battery of same age and im looking at replacing them not my allrounder battery its still going strong.

    One Happy Womble
